Everything we need to know about Windows 10

Windows have stated they are designing and developing their new Windows 10 operating system completing differently from the way they’ve always done it by taking in customer feedback, and with only a couple of months to go till release there’s a lot of talk about whether they will finally deliver.

But what is Windows 10 all about, well it’s a complete update of the Windows 8.1 operating system which should be out sometime this summer. Some of the new features to Windows 10 include interface changes to streamline the desktop experience which consist of a new taskbar, a smarter Start menu which has a simple control to flip from a small menu to a full-screen one, and smaller borders around windows to give a neater finish.

Other key features of Window 10 are a Windows Phone style notification bar, which replaces the old Charms bar and allows you to alter and change notifications using the new settings app. Windows 10 also comes with something Microsoft calls Continuum, which is a tablet mode and can be triggered from the Notification bar. It allows you to switch all your windows to full screen which is a very simplistic way of handling a tablet interface, but it combines with the other interface features to be more useful for touch users. Alongside this Microsoft’s voice driven Cortana assistant comes to Windows 10 which is well integrated into the interface, and helps you with all sorts of things from searching for files to setting reminders.

One of most hotly anticipated features of Windows 10 is obviously the new browser project Spartan which is built to deliver a better web experience, and enables you to write and mark up webpages before sharing them with others. Spartan will also support built-in offline reading and PDF support, and with Microsoft’s virtual assistant in Spartan it will pop up with recommendations and help based on your browser behavior. Also with Window 10 you won’t have to wonder if you have the latest features or security updates, as Windows automatically delivers updates when they’re ready directly to your device.

But what about apps well, Microsoft have come up with universal apps which are special versions of key apps like Office for Windows 10 phones and tablets. Apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook will look and feel nearly identical to the desktop equivalent, but will be optimized for touch and screen size. Furthermore through Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure all of your files will be accessible through those devices regardless of where it was created.

But the best news of all is you could get Windows 10 for free as Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified new or existing Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows phones 8.1 devices that upgrade in the first year, happy days if that’s you just check out the Microsoft website. To summarize Windows 10 is coming along nicely and is shaping up to be one of Microsoft’s most popular releases let’s just hope its lives up to the bill.
