Yeah, vWorker is great. If you can afford to hire someone to make an app for you, it’s definitely worth it because you’ll get something extremely professional.

Another option is elance. Keep in mind though even when hiring cheap developers which generally means outside the US costs can be substantial. Software development is a professional and time consuming endeavor. Angry birds was not developed in 20 hours. There were many thousands of hours of development time that went into it.

As a point of reference we run a mobile social community called BuzzE. There are probably a very conservative 5000 hours of development time that have gone into building and adding features to that app.

The main lesson I would take away is expect to spend some money or lots of time building something significant. After that throwing it on the App Store isn’t going to make you any money. You need to spend a lot of time devising a marketing plan as well and possibly spend money there as well.

Mobile is in its infancy and probably where the web was back in about 1998 so there are still plenty of opportunities but it isn’t an easy money throw up a fart app and get rich environment anymore.

I agree! However, there are free ways to promote your apps online. Starting a blog or a website is one way to do it, but there are many different ways to start getting downloads without paying for advertising.
